Basel Chapter #227 Switzerland

7 November 2024
Workshop Open to the Public
The Basel Chapter’s third regulars meeting took place on 7 November 2024 at the Schützenhaus.
Our member, Véronique Masurel from Kaden-ryū, led a Kokedama workshop. Kokedama (苔玉), originating in Japan in the early 1990s, are decorative moss balls in which plants thrive. The moss used was sourced sustainably from local, non-protected forest areas. These unique plant arrangements not only enhance their surroundings but also bring joy in both creation and easy maintenance.
The process began by carefully removing the soil from the plant’s roots. A bowl of water was covered with a jute cloth, then clay pellets, Fuji soil, fertilizer, and potting soil were added. The plant was placed in the mixture and shaped into a firm ball. It was then wrapped in moss and secured with pins and wire. To maintain moisture, the Kokedama must be regularly soaked in water.
All photos from the event can be viewed on Facebook.
The evening concluded with a shared dinner, where we enjoyed reconnecting.

25 January 2025
Demonstration Chapter Meeting Open to the Public
The board of Ikebana International Basel Chapter warmly invited members to the Shinnenkai New Year’s reception on 25 January 2025, in the Meistersaal of the Schützenhaus.
Wally Gschwind, President of Basel Chapter, and Marianne Rupf welcomed 38 guests, including members of the German-Japanese Society, the Bonsai and Kyuseki Association, calligraphy enthusiasts, I.I. members, and Mr. A. Angehrn.
Hôshû Alex Angehrn, a Zen monk and 8th-degree calligraphy master, captivated the audience with stories about Zen monks and their insights. He spoke about the appreciation of empty space as sacred, the mysterious sense of naturalness, the beauty of simplicity, and the idea of a tea room as a miniature Zen temple. Concepts like Wabi-Sabi and Zen-inspired calligraphy were explored, deepening the guests’ understanding of its nuances.
Surrounded by the audience, Alex Angehrn demonstrated the art of Shodō (Japanese calligraphy), emphasizing the importance of presence, fluid motion, and decisive strokes. His brushwork beautifully illustrated the spiritual and philosophical foundations of this art.
Following the presentation, the guests enjoyed an Apéro Riche, toasting to a healthy and joyful New Year. In the spirit of Ikebana, the event symbolized friendship through flowers, building connections, and fostering harmony.
