Boston Chapter #17 USA

Chapter Meeting Open to the Public Ikenobo, Ohara, Sogetsu
Members and guests had the opportunity to go on a tour of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston Japanese Galleries which had been reopened in May 2024 after an extensive renovation, during which the galleries were closed for five years. The MFA Boston has the largest collection of Japanese art outside of Japan. The tour was led by one of the three curators, Sarah Thompson PhD, assisted by Assistant Curator, Asako Katsura. Dr. Thompson’s specialty is Japanese prints, and she is the creator of the MFA Boston digital catalog of over 50,000 prints. Her most recent books include Genji: The Prince and the Parodies, and Hokusai’s Landscapes: The Complete Series.
There were two tour times at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. The small size of the groups allowed ample opportunity for questions. And it was a rare treat to hear about details and inside information not otherwise available. The art work and other materials are updated every six months, so some members suggested repeating this event next year could be a great possibility. It was a fun social event as well. Many participants got together for coffee before the tour or for lunch after the tour. Others took the opportunity to check out many of the other museum exhibits and offerings.
