San Diego Chapter #119 USA

20 NOVEMBER 2024
Workshop Chapter Meeting
Sogetsu, Ikenobo, Ichiyo, Ohara,

The meeting opened with a brief business meeting. President Cecilia Carrick congratulated two members who have been designated NCAR Advocates: Ginger Truschke is an NCAR advocate for Treasurer and Patricia Fuchs is now an NCAR advocate for graphic and web design.

Guest Dale Rekus (member of the San Diego floral association) thanked our chapter when he reported that seven members of the chapter would be participating in the Festival of Trees.

After reminding attendees about the Holiday Show, the need for Japanese Friendship Garden Tokonoma arrangers for Spring/Summer 2025, and announcing that the workshop was full, the meeting transitioned to the scheduled demonstration and workshop on how to use wire grids.

Deborah Warriner, Ichiyo Master teacher, has been practicing ikebana for over 35 years. Ms. Warriner discussed tips on how to use the grids, i.e. using gravity to help bend them and that floral materials should have three points of contact to be secure. She noted that these grids can expand the area of traditional containers and that they allow one to make sculptural forms with multiple planes. She showed both moribana and nageire style arrangements, and after completing her demo, attendees representing different schools (who had registered for the workshop) created an arrangement using a single wire grid using a container and floral materials they brought. After most attendees completed their work, attendees were invited to eat lunch together and participate in the raffle.
