Chicago Chapter #27, USA
Destination Asia Festival at The Morton Arboretum
Members of Ikebana International Chicago Chapter #27 participated in the Destination Asia Festival at Morton Arboretum.
The Destination Asia Festival celebrates the cultures of Asia, where many trees and plants at The Morton Arboretum originated. From its founding in 1922, The Arboretum’s collection has included Asian plants. Since the early 1990s, Kris Bachtell, Vice President of Collections and Facilities, and colleagues have traveled to China and other Asian countries frequently, collecting specimens of paperbark maple and other plants. The Arboretum collects plants, including endangered trees, from the wild for study and conservation. Research teams then add these plants to the Arboretum collection and preserve the species for the study and enjoyment of tree champions in future generations.
The I.I. demonstrators from Ohara and Sogetsu Schools provided two sessions each on Saturday, August 3 and on Sunday, August 4. As the demonstrations were outdoors, they had to manage breeze and bright sun on a warm and humid day. The outdoor setting was beautiful.
