Ikebana Demonstration & Workshop for “Sowing Seeds”
- To provide 110 second graders with a positive experience to make their own ikebana arrangements, preplanning was essential for the success of the program.
- Ikebana was well introduced to attract children’s attention. The cans became the container (filled with flower materials) to which the children may add their own creative input by decorating the outside.
- The demonstration by the various schools of Ikebana was carried out and a lecture about the philosophy behind Ikebana was given to all the second graders in the cafeteria.
- The children’s faces beamed proudly as they displayed their unique arrangements. The experience had an impact on them in the present as well as into the future. In that moment, the experience of creating an ikebana arrangement had brought them joy. Later, the second graders may become ikebana ambassadors as they shared what they had learned with the rest of the school. They are the “Sowing Seeds” by inspiring other children to love ikebana!
