New York Chapter #7 USA
April 1st, 2025
Demonstration
On April 1, 2025, IINY partnered with the New York Botanical Garden to present a demonstration of Ohara Ikebana, drawing audience of 115 guests. This is the third year that IINY has partnered with NYBG. The program offered a unique opportunity to explore the rich philosophy and evolving styles of the Ohara School.
Led by Ohara sensei Jose Salcedo from Los Angeles, the presentation featured a series of seasonal and expressive arrangements that reflected both the classical roots and modern innovations of the school. The demonstration deeply resonated with the audience, many of whom took the opportunity to enjoy the Garden’s spring displays before or after the event. The program served not only as a cultural and educational showcase but also as an effective outreach effort, engaging both members and new audiences.

Japan Day Parade Open to the Public
The event featured 22 marchers from the II NY Chapter, including II NY members, Sogetsu NY Branch members, friends, and ikebana enthusiasts. As a group, they proudly marched down Central Park West from West 81st Street to West 67th Street. All participants wore custom-made red and white Happi coats, specially designed and produced in Japan for the event, which added a distinctive visual element to our delegation.
The parade was marshalled by Masaharu Morimoto, widely known as the star of Iron Chef and Iron Chef America. The walk itself took approximately 50 minutes to complete from start to finish. Thousands of people lined the streets, creating a vibrant, festive, and enjoyable atmosphere throughout the day. According to official New York Police Department estimates, approximately 60,000 people attended the Japan Parade & Street Fair in New York City in 2025. The entire event was free to the public.

Open to the Public
The event saw the participation of 29 individuals, including one non-member, who gathered for our Annual General Meeting and a very successful auction. Approximately 30 items were featured in both live and silent auctions, generating significant enthusiasm. These items were generously donated by the daughter and son of our cherished passed member, Myra Ruth Hecht. The auction proved to be a highlight, contributing greatly to the success of the event.
