St Petersburg Chapter #65 USA

Demonstration Chapter Meeting Open to the Public
The January program was a demonstration of Kadomatsu – a Japanese New Year
arrangement.
Kadomatsu is the landmark for the Shinto deity Toshigami-sama to enter your home. In Japan, it is believed that Toshigami-sama comes to each family to bring happiness on New Year’s Day. However, the deity only visits when he/ she is invited. The Kadomatsu decorations take on the role of a sign at an entrance to welcome the deity.
Monique Noujaim, sensei from Sogetsu and Laurel Barbara Fooks, sensei from Banmi Shofu both offered their view on the New Year’s arrangement. Laurel created a more traditional Ikebana representation of Kadomatsu and Monique’s interpretation portrayed a modern look. Each arrangement was beautiful and everyone enjoyed the demonstration.
January 25 – 26, 2025
Demonstration
This was our first year exhibiting Ikebana at the Quak Center at Westminister Suncoast. The Colors of Japan was our featured theme. There were over 33 exhibitors from five Ikebana schools showcasing 54 stunning arrangements. We had over 400 guests attending our exhibition.
Our Ikebana floral artists incorporated colors associated with Japan, such as red, white, black and green, using them to create exciting and unique arrangements. Flowers with containers were also on sale in our Hana shop as well as floral themed gifts in the Ginza.

Sybille Ruschmeier introduced Patsy Beyer, a member of the Sogetsu School. The theme of her demonstration was Creative, Unconventional and Unorthodox Containers. Her displayed containers included a dryer for baby bottles, a steering wheel cover, candle holders, a placemat and a white crate. Patsy used baby’s breath, Royal poinciana pods, green carnations, dried leaves and red berries in her arrangements. While discussing containers, Patsy offered that many containers and items for Ikebana can be found at Home Depot and thrift stores. She also displayed other items including a small beaded purse, a hubcap and an electrical component from a television all capable with a designer’s imagination to be used in an arrangement.
